Zōon Politikon (ζῷον πολιτικόν) – “the political being” – is a term from ancient philosophy, coined by Aristotle. In his work Politics, he describes human beings as naturally social and political creatures. Unlike other living beings, humans possess logos – the capacity for reason and articulate speech. This enables us to distinguish between right and wrong, to debate what is just, and to make collective decisions that shape the common good.

For Aristotle, the polis – the city-state – is the natural environment in which humans could flourish and lead a good life. Politics, in his view, is the space where morality, reason, and civic spirit converge. Or, in the words of Aristotle:

“The aim of the political community is the good life (eu zēn – εὖ ζῆν).”

The idea of Zōon Politikon remains highly relevant today. It underpins key principles of modern democracy, human rights, civil society, the pursuit of the common good, and political participation – in short, everywhere people take responsibility together and actively shape public life.
